Grank, pictured above, was the first one to have firesight.

Firesight is the ability of an animal; usually owls, and sometimes even wolves, to look into a fire and have a vision of the future or past.

There are different level's of power in being able to "read" fire. A fire is said to offer its images to only the most powerful fire reader, such as in the case of Hoole and Grank. Since Hoole was more powerful at reading than Grank, the fire offered clearer images to Hoole. Some owls considered having firesight a curse.

Shadow Wolf

After ruining the byrrgis, Faolan is then sent to the Carreg Gaer of the MacDuncan's to visit Duncan MacDuncan. There is a fire in the cave. Duncan begins to wonder if Faolan has the firesight, a rare ability to see images through the flames.
The chieftain wonders if the young gnaw wolf sees the cold before the summer moons, if the Long Cold would return. But all Faolan sees in the flames is the odd spiral mark on his splayed paw, the mark of a gyre soul.

Known to have Firesight

The following have been said to have the firesight:

Creatures with firesight see things in fires.

  • Grank (Guardians of Ga'Hoole)
  • Fengo (Guardians of Ga'Hoole)
  • Hoole (Guardians of Ga'Hoole)
  • Coryn (Guardians of Ga'Hoole)
  • Orf (Guardians of Ga'Hoole)
  • Faolan (possibly, Wolves of the Beyond)
  • Duncan MacDuncan (possibly, Wolves of the Beyond)

It is believed that Faolan has firesight because he saw a vision of the print of his splayed paw, the spiral mark, in the fire at the chieftain's cave in the Carreg Gaer of the MacDuncan Clan in Shadow Wolf.  However, it is still unknown, and has not been confirmed.  It is also thought that Duncan MacDuncan has firesight because he looked into the fire and saw that Long Cold times were coming.  But this has not been proven true, and is still unknown.
