Description[]

Malachy was an elderly male dire wolf with crooked hips. His pelt was brindled, meaning he had streaks of brown and gray. He very likely had a brown or black nose and his eyes were green like all the wolves of the Beyond.

History[]

Shadow Wolf[]

Although not formerly appearing, Malachy was at the gaddergnaw with the other Watch wolves.

Watch Wolf[]

In Watch Wolf, Malachy is first seen tutoring Faolan and Edme, quizzing them by holding up a jump bone with an owl face carved on it.

When he held up a profile of a Great Horned Owl, Faolan answered "Long-eared". Edme then blurted out "Great Horned". Malachy, in response, asked the two what the differences were between a Great Horned Owl's tufts and a Long-eared Owl's. He next gives the two a challenging question - he asked them which owl has featherless legs. The question shocks Faolan and Edme, then Malachy includes, "Bare as a bear cub's butt." It reminds Faolan and Edme of when Edme had played with Toby, leaving them a little disturbed. Soon, Malachy hears a whining sound, and immediately realizes that the she-winds are coming rather early. Malachy sends the two to Twist and Winks, their taigas.

Frost Wolf[]

In Frost Wolf, Malachy appears in the raghnaid at the gadderheal. At the news of Blood Watch wolves going by-lang, Malachy and Twist shook their heads in disbelief.

Spirit Wolf[]

After the earthquake, he is seen by Faolan, Mhairie and Dearlea, lying dead next to the collier, Conny.

Death[]

Malachy died in the earthquake due to a boulder crushing his head. Lying dead next to him was Conny, a collier from the great tree trained by Soren.

Trivia[]

Malachy's name is Irish, and is actually spelt "Malachi", meaning "Messenger of God".
