Distant Blue

The Distant Blue (also known as the Always Cold or Great West) is an area west of the Beyond. It was the original homeland of the dire wolves, who resided in the Beyond prior to the earthquake, and the current home (as of the end of Star Wolf) of Faolan and the earthquake survivors.

Description[]

The Distant Blue was the proper climate and territory for dire wolves to live in. In the epilogue of Star Wolf, Faolan observes "long grasses sprinkled with wildflowers that he'd had never seen"; two new animal species resided there: horses and bison. A great Ice Bridge separates the Distant Blue and the Beyond.

History[]

Before the Books[]

The dire wolves lived in the Always Cold thousands of years ago, but ice, snow, frost, blizzard and coldness—known as the Long Cold—washed over the area. The Long Cold followed the wolves where ever they tried to escape, and eventually, they fled to the Beyond, the only area absent of the eternal winter, with Fengo leading the wolves on the Ice March.

Frost Wolf[]

Faolan sees the Distant Blue when he stands on the Blood Watch looking west.

Spirit Wolf[]

Faolan mentions that he saw the Distant Blue on the Blood Watch and proclaims that that's where they needed to go. The earthquake survivors travel towards the Distant Blue, trekking through the Spirit Woods, around the glacier, and across the Crystal Plain.

Star Wolf[]

On the last chapter, the travelers reach the Distant Blue via narwhales. Faolan finds tracks of bison, and spots horses. One horse, a creamy white stallion, turns its head, its face scarred with no fur, as if it had been through fire. The wolf and horse look at each other, and the horse rears up, crying out, "The Star Wolf is back!"

Trivia[]

  • Jouzhenkyn (the Middle Kingdoms) from The River of Wind may be on the same landmass as the Distant Blue. This would mean the Hoolian owls can fly across the Sea of Vastness to visit it.
